The Seattle Storm and Seattle Parks and Recreation marked the opening of a refreshed community basketball court at Benefit Playground in South Seattle on Sept. 29, according to KOMO News.
The ribbon-cutting marked the debut of a court refreshed through the Storm’s Eye of the Storm initiative. KOMO reported that the court includes a mural curated by artist Nikita Ares and an official WNBA three-point line.
From initiative to opening
The Benefit Playground event turns a previously announced community-court program into a completed local project. The Storm launched Eye of the Storm with a stated goal of transforming neighborhood courts into spaces for connection, wellness, creativity and belonging.
KOMO reported that the Storm unveiled two transformed courts in September: Victory Heights Playground Park in Northeast Seattle and Benefit Playground in South Seattle. Each newly transformed court debuted with a community celebration hosted by the team.
A continuing public commitment
The station reported that one of the two courts features a full artist activation and mural experience tailored to its neighborhood, while the other receives a Storm-branded refresh. The report did not disclose a project cost, construction timetable for future sites or programming schedule beyond the opening celebrations.
The club’s larger commitment remains two community-court transformations per year through 2030. The newly opened Benefit Playground court is therefore a completed early example of that multi-year plan—not a promise of a future facility or an NBA expansion development.
