Washington men’s basketball has added a specialized development role to Danny Sprinkle’s staff, appointing Jayson Wells as Director of Mindset & Culture.

Washington Athletics announced the move Sept. 8. Wells most recently spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton under head coach Dedrique Taylor, where Sprinkle previously served as an assistant from 2013 through 2019.

A role that matches his background

Before officially joining the Cal State Fullerton coaching staff, Wells worked with the Titans as a skills-development and mental-performance coach. Washington says he designed and delivered off-court mindset and leadership content intended to support the team and its culture.

That previous work gives the new title a direct source-backed context. Washington has not publicly detailed the job’s day-to-day duties, reporting structure or performance benchmarks, so it would be premature to define them beyond the role and experience the university announced.

Nike and professional experience

Wells also served as Nike Grassroots Basketball’s director of skill development from 2012 through 2017, including as director of the Nike Elite 100 from 2015 through 2017. The university says he has been involved in motivational speaking and skills development since retiring from professional basketball in 2010.

His playing background includes 13 seasons overseas after graduating from Indiana State. That history does not guarantee a competitive result for Washington, but it helps explain why the Huskies hired a figure whose experience connects coaching, on-court instruction and off-court leadership work.

What the appointment confirms

The staff move brings Wells to Washington after recent Division I bench experience and a longer resume in skills development and mental performance. The university has not attached public promises to the role or released a forecast for how it will affect the program’s on-court results.

The supportable takeaway is narrower: Sprinkle’s staff now includes a Director of Mindset & Culture whose prior work aligns with the name of the new position. The program’s next steps will show how that specialized role fits into Washington’s broader basketball operation.
